How Map It handles information
Effective July 29, 2026. This page covers the Map It website and the Map It Chrome extension version 1.0.0.

Information handled by the website
- Map creation stores the source address or submitted source, audience and detail settings, optional focus text, generation state, and the resulting map and learning interactions.
- Accounts use Clerk for identity and sessions. Map It stores the product profile and ownership data needed for account features.
- The website includes Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights for site usage and performance measurement. The repository defines no custom content-bearing analytics payload.
- Operational events use bounded fields such as status, duration, counts, and failure codes. Repository policy prohibits source addresses, map content, prompts, credentials, cookies, provider bodies, and raw capability values in those structured events.
Information sent by the extension
Only after the extension confirms your Map It sign-in, you accept the current extension disclosure, and you choose Map this page, the extension reads and sends the selected page's HTTP(S) address, audience and detail choices, and any optional focus text to Map It at https://www.mapit.info. Map It fetches the selected page on its server to create the requested map.
The extension does not send the selected page's cookies, form fields, or page contents, and it does not inject scripts into the selected page. It does not call an AI or transcript provider directly.
The extension uses Clerk's Chrome Extension client and the Map It website Sync Host to recognize your website session. It contacts only the configured Clerk Frontend API and https://www.mapit.info for that authentication bootstrap. Each creation and status request uses a fresh short-lived bearer token in the background worker. The extension does not put that token in Chrome storage, popup messages, logs, or release provenance.
Information stored on your device
Chrome local storage retains generation preferences, the current disclosure receipt, and one current authenticated job. Current-job data includes the selected address and title, canonical request settings and optional focus text, an authenticated map ID, a one-way account-binding hash, an idempotency key, map status, notification flags, and timestamps so polling can resume after the popup or service worker closes. Account-linked job data and its notification are removed when the session signs out or the account changes; ordinary preferences and the current disclosure receipt remain.
Purposes and technical services
Map It uses this information to fetch the source you selected, generate and display the map, resume progress, notify you when it is ready, secure access, diagnose bounded failures, and provide account features you choose.
The current application has technical integrations with Clerk, Vercel hosting/measurement, configured OpenAI, Anthropic or Vercel AI Gateway model paths, and optional Supadata transcript/search paths. Which server-side path is used depends on the submitted source and deployment configuration. This is a technical inventory, not a complete legal subprocessor list.
Security
The public extension is restricted to the canonical Map It HTTPS origin and the exact configured Clerk Frontend API/Sync Host origins. Extension creation and polling are authenticated and owner-scoped on the server. Bounded source fetching, short-lived worker-local tokens, account-bound local jobs, and content-free structured logging reduce exposure, but no service can promise absolute security.
Retention and deletion
Active map records have no general fixed expiry in current repository policy. Signed-in owners can move maps to Trash and restore them. Trashed maps become eligible for bounded operator purge after the current 30-day boundary; cleanup is operator-run, not an installed destructive schedule, and security audit history may survive map purge.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use
Information obtained through Chrome is used only to provide the extension's single purpose: sending the page you explicitly select to Map It and creating an explorable mind map. The extension does not use that information for advertising, user profiling, or sale, and does not transfer it for an unrelated purpose.
Updates and support
Material extension-disclosure changes use a new consent version so the normal map action remains unavailable until the updated disclosure is accepted. This page will show a new effective date when its material terms change.
